What Summorum Pontificum Said

Pope Benedict’s Summorum Pontificum (still valid in its Magisterial teaching on the Liturgy) starts out referencing the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2022 version).

It states “each particular Church must be in accord with the universal Church not only regarding the doctrine of the faith and sacramental signs, but also as to the usages universally received from apostolic and unbroken tradition. These are to be observed not only so that errors may be avoided, but also that the faith may be handed on in its integrity, since the Church’s rule of prayer (lex orandi) corresponds to her rule of faith (lex credendi).”

How the universal Church (including the Latin Church) worships must be in conformity with the apostolic and unbroken tradition, for the purpose of preserving the Faith, and preventing the spread of error. This is why I advocate so much for the TLM. Secondarily for the historical liturgical culture, Latin, or chant, but primarily for the clear preservation of the Catholic Faith. This issue goes above and beyond esthetical preference or a particular parish community.

This is about preserving that apostolic and unbroken tradition, to maintain and teach the Faith through the liturgy itself, especially the Church’s teachings on the nature of the Mass.

That is that the Mass is primarily the propitiatory sacrifice (to save souls) of Our Lord Jesus Christ on the Cross, and secondarily a memorial of the Last Supper and a communion meal. The inversion is Protestant, while the proper order is Catholic.

Thank you Pope Benedict.

Ja Ja, Bitte Okie.
