October 13th, Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima

We watched the old film The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima in honor of today’s anniversary, also because it reminded me of yesterday’s blog post that mentioned the Fatima Miracle of the Sun.

It is an excellent film, especially for children or in a family setting, though probably the best simple introduction to Fatima for any adult.

As I remarked yesterday, it seems like the modern mind needs modern miracles like this, verified by science, in order to believe in the old miracles of the Bible and Middle Ages, and therefore the personal God of Revelation.

I count learning about these as instrumental in my childhood maturation in the Faith, and truth be told would very possibly have had a weaker faith had it not been for learning about Fatima and other more recent miracles.

Also, truth be told, much of the strength of my Faith is due to Our Lady.  It is remarkable how instrumental her role is, in bringing the Messiah into the world, in offering all our prayers to her Son at the foot of the Cross, of dispensing all divine graces downward to us, of being our Mother, and of her own prophetic role throughout Church history through her apparitions and messages.

She brings people to the Faith, to her Son.  She intercedes for us more than anyone to her Son, being each person’s advocate to her Son.  And I think it is especially through the miraculous apparitions of Our Lady in modern times, that the earnest seeker of truth can be brought to Christ and His Church.

Let me conclude this post by giving a personal account of what I believe was a miracle associated with Our Lady.  It was May, 2009 and I was visiting my future wife in the Philippines, joining their annual Society of St. Pius X pilgrimage.  On the third and final day we reached the end by summiting a hill at the top of which was a shrine to Our Lady of Fatima.

It was pouring rain, dark and cloudy, just as it had been for pilgrims to Fatima on October 13, 1917 who had come due to Our Lady’s promise of a miraculous sign.  At the very end of our prayers marking the end of the pilgrimage, suddenly the rain stopped, the sky became clear, the sun could then be seen bright in the sky, as well as a rainbow.

For me the fact this happened at the very conclusion of the pilgrimage, at a shrine to Our Lady of Fatima, in a very similar way to the original Fatima Miracle of the Sun, is not a concidence but beyond a reasonable doubt a miracle.   It was yet another modern day miracle, which I had the privilege to witness, associated with Our Lady showing the truth of the Holy Trinity and the Catholic Faith.

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us.
